School Learning
Week beginning: 01/07/2024
EYFS:
This week we have enjoyed reading Oliver’s Fruit Salad by Vivian French, we linked it to Healthy Living Week and used this as an inspiration to create our own fruit salad followed with writing about how we made it. In maths we have been learning about pattern rules. We had to look carefully at the pattern to work out the pattern being repeated, we then explored our own pattern rules. Topic has focussed on keeping healthy, we have done Joe Wicks workouts every day and then made workouts using a pattern rule. We have learnt that a good sleeping routine, washing ourselves, brushing our teeth and talking about our feelings all help with keeping us healthy in mind and body. Finally, Sports day was amazing - with great team spirit and resilience on show!
Year 1:
In Year 1, we have very much enjoyed taking part in our 100 Challenge this week. We have danced to lots of different genres of music. Our Maths work has continued to focus on money. We have investigated notes and then counted using coins and found equivalences. Beegu has been our focus text in English. We created a mind map of adjectives to describe Beegu, designed a new friend for Beegu and wrote a letter to Beegu’s Mum telling her what had happened. In Design and Technology, we have been investigating levers and sliders. We created a moving picture which we used to retell the story of The Gingerbread Man.
Year 2:
This week in Year 2, we have been looking at heads and positions of the features! We drew different faces and created a collage of facial features from pictures in magazines. In maths, we have been looking at tables and tally charts. The children really enjoyed answering different questions to create tallys. We had lots of fun at Sports Day where all the children did so well, winning points for their team. While looking at The Myth of Pandora's box, we had to make predictions and we have explored 'wow' vocabulary. To top all of this off, we took part in our 100 challenge, doing 100 laps of the adventure playground.
Year 3:
Another fun packed week with sports day, our skipping challenge and lots of practical learning. In maths we have been learning to tell the time on analogue clocks to the nearest 5 minutes and to the nearest minute. In English, we have continued reading the Iron Man only to discover that he's in fact still alive! We wrote letters from Hogarth to a friend, explaining the re-discovery of the Iron Man, recapping on the layout of a letter. We have started our new art topic, exploring lines and patterns in drawings, and using these skills to create our own doodles - pictures to follow on Facebook. We also created our own observational drawings of natural objects such as shells and used our knowledge of lines and patterns to produce a piece of artwork inspired by Africa.
Year 4:
In maths this week, we have been focusing on position and direction exploring using and plotting coordinates, drawing 2-d shapes on a grid, and translating information on a grid. In English, we have been exploring our last book, There’s a Rang-tan in my bedroom which is all about a baby orangutan that has lost his home to deforestation which also fits in with our geography unit. We made predictions and inferences and explored the front cover. We then explored an image from the book that shows deforestation and answered different questions about what was happening. In geography, we looked at rainforest layers and what they contain. We also explored the key features of rainforests and the impact of deforestation on rainforests.
Year 5:
We have been busy participating in Healthy Living Week; we successfully completed our PTFA 100 Challenge on the moor, went swimming in Sowerby Bridge and visited Karate in Triangle! We continued to rehearse for the end-of-year production and learnt about compass points and grid references to complete our Geography unit.
Year 6:
The children have been working really hard this week on their singing and acting skills as the performance of our Year 5/6 production, ‘School-o-Vision Song Contest’, approaches; we enjoyed our first full dress rehearsal on Wednesday morning and the children looked fantastic. To celebrate Healthy Living Week, the children really enjoyed their class visit to the Elland Road football stadium, where we learned about the different types of jobs that exist within professional sports clubs, and the Hunslet Club, where we participated in a range of sporting activities. The children did themselves proud as team captains during our annual sports day on Thursday before continuing to prepare for their transition to High School with Calderdale Transition Day on Friday.
