School Learning
Week beginning: 10/06/2024
EYFS:
This week we have focussed our learning upon celebrations of Father's Day and Eid ul Adha. In Literacy, we have listened to My Dad is Amazing by Sabrina Moyle, we then worked on writing our own sentences to describe our daddy. Children had to think carefully about what they wanted to write as well as checking it made sense and using correct letter formation. We made Father's Day cards and wrote our sentences inside. In maths, we have been composing and decomposing shapes by filling larger shape templates with smaller shapes, thinking about shape, size and rotation. We decomposed shapes by cutting a shape in half then using the parts of the shape to create a new shape. In topic, we have been learning about the importance of Eid for Muslims and how it is celebrated. We also visited St Andrews Church to see what is inside a Church and why Christians might go there.
Year 1:
Our maths work has continued to focus on securing our knowledge of place value to 100. We have partitioned numbers, using number lines and hundred squares to investigate numbers. Our English work has been based on ‘The Man on The Moon’. We created a story map before making changes to the main character’s timetable and retelling the story with the changes. We have been busy completing the Phonics Screening Check this week and also enjoyed our trip to Lytham St Annes where we investigated the features of the seaside.
Year 2:
This week, we designed and created our very own bug hotel to provide minibeasts with a new micro-habitat. In maths, we have been telling the time using o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to before moving on to past the hour and to the hour (e.g. 10 past, 25 to). In English, we have been writing a character description about Uncle B from Pa's point of view. We have shown how the characters opinion changes throughout the story. In ICT, we have been making a collage based on surrealism art.
Year 3:
Assessments have been our main focus this week. We have celebrated progress in reading, writing and maths, we are so proud of the children's achievements! In reciprocal reading, we have started Michael Morpurgo's 'Mr Nobody's Eyes', practising the skills of predicting, clarifying, questioning, and summarising. We have completed our science unit by predicting and carrying out an investigation to find out if the size of magnets affected their magnetic strength. The results were surprising! In French we translated a song about healthy eating using our knowledge of fruit and vegetables. We had fun playing a quiz in music covering musical knowledge from throughout the year.
Year 4:
This week, the children have all completed the multiplication tables check. They have worked so incredibly hard with their times tables and have all made such great progress from where they started. They should all be incredibly proud of themselves! In English, we finished writing our unhappy ending narrative to a well-known fairytale. The children used great creative language and really thought about creating an atmosphere of tension within their stories - also including some gore! We have now moved on to explore the poem, Albert and the Lion. We have thought about techniques used, the specific dialect of the language and how the poetry creates a story. In maths we have looked at different quadrilaterals and polygon shapes. We thought about the features of these types of shapes and then used this knowledge to apply to reasoning and problem-solving questions.
Year 5:
This week, the children have worked really hard and tried their best with their assessments – a huge well done for their efforts! We learnt about external devices in Computing, using iPads to control a game, which we coded, on laptops. We looked at changes during infancy and old age in science, before completing our learning by spotting patterns in data for gestation, litter size and life expectancy in a variety of animals.
Year 6:
In English, the children have enjoyed reading the opening chapters of a version of ‘1001 Arabian Nights’ by Geraldine McCaughrean before making comparisons between narrative and comic strip versions of Sinbad the Sailor stories. In Maths, we have consolidated our understanding of line graphs, conversion of units and money problems by investigating holidays. In Geography, the children have learnt about the global supply chain of a smartphone, before developing their understanding of where our food comes from and the economic, social and environmental impact of food exports. In PE we have learnt to do the triple jump and have also enjoyed team relay races.
