School Learning
Week beginning: 20/05/2024
EYFS:
This week, we have been working on our Phase 4 phonics words in Literacy. We have revisited and embedded phonics learning this week, focussing on 4/5 phoneme words such as 'blink' and 'munch'. In maths we have continued to consolidate learning around addition and subtraction using first, then and now stories. Children were challenged further by working backwards using addition or subtraction, for example, finding how many they started with if 3 were added and there are 7 altogether. In topic, we completed our dinosaur topic learning about fossils and comparing palaeontologists from the past to the present.
Year 1:
In English we have continued our work on poetry. We have written a class acrostic poem about Spring. We have also been thinking about securing our knowledge of what a sentence is, writing High 5 Sentences and adding additional information through our use of conjunctions and adjectives. Our Maths work has focused upon position and direction. We have been describing movements using the words forwards, backwards, above and below. We have also been learning about ordinal numbers. We enjoyed performing ‘Getting Dressed’ in front of the school on Tuesday, showcasing what we have been learning in Music.
Year 2:
This week, we performed 'Eye of the Tiger' on our recorders to the whole school. We used notes b, a and g! We did so well and Mrs Hayes who oversees music couldn't believe how amazing we were! The children have completed their assessments and have pushed themselves to achieve. Mrs Spink and Mrs Jackson are so proud of them all! We have also recapped all our learning by taking part in the 'quiz of the year'. The children have remembered so much and have really shown what incredible little learners they are!
Year 3:
We have had a fun and creative week! We have successfully made our pencil cases in D.T, deciding whether to use a running stitch, back-stitch, or whip stitch, before sewing a button to the top to fasten it. We sewed parts of our design onto the pencil cases and used fabric pastel dye sticks to add detail. The end results were fantastic! We evaluated our product and highlighted things that worked well and identified ways to improve it. We have been exploring tongue twisters and alliteration in English, writing our own alliterative sentences about different story settings.
Year 4:
This week in English, we have begun to explore, The Lost Happy Endings. We focused on what we could infer from the front cover. We also thought about predictions we could make both before and after we knew the title. We then explored editing and improving our sentences with different parts of the story. In maths, we have been exploring time. We have looks at days, weeks, years, hours, minutes and seconds, converting between the units and answering reasoning and problem-solving questions. We then explored the 24-hour clock converting between analogue and digital. In DT, we investigated existing torches and lights exploring their functions. We then looked at simple circuits, reinforcing our science work and components needed within a torch.
Year 5:
In Maths we learnt to multiply and divide decimals by multiples of 10 (10, 100 & 1,000), addressing the misconception that zeros are added or removed from the initial number. In English we learnt about Percy Shaw, researching his life and investigating the inspiration for his Cats Eyes invention. We also considered Percy’s personality and how his wealth didn’t change him as a person before completing our biography on him. In DT, we prepared and made Fairtrade cookies. We evaluated them against our initial design criteria and learnt the importance of basic food hygiene, measuring ingredients, making the dough mixture, preheating the oven and leaving enough space between the cookie mixture on the baking tray.
Year 6:
In English, we have revised how to punctuate speech and how to use dialogue effectively to develop character; we then explored the graphic novel ‘Journey’ before planning and writing a narrative version of the story, integrating purposeful dialogue. In Maths, the children used pairs of compasses to create geometric art with repeating patterns. In DT, the children developed their practical skills by creating a cam and slider mechanism, before planning and building their own pop-up message (with a mechanical device) to promote healthy living. In PSHE, we had a visit from three members of West Yorkshire Police who talked about the importance of making sensible life choices and the relationship between actions and consequences.
